Can I refill this Lexmark Inkjet?

Are you confused about which new Lexmark inkjet cartridges are refillable?  Join the club.  Lexmark has mixed its Return Program Cartridges part numbers in with normal or non-return program cartridges (“A” Versions) so its quite confusing which cartridges can be refilled. For example a 43XL can be refilled it is not a return program but a 37XL is; so a 37XL cannot be refilled but a 37XLA can.

When purchasing a Return Program Cartridge the customer is given a $3.00 pre-bate and agrees only to use that cartridge one time. The “drops fired” are counted; when the predetermined amount of ink has been used the cartridge becomes permanently locked. The drop count follows the cartridge; installing the cartridge into different printers is not a work around.

The Cartridges will sometimes print to fade before the “drop count” has been reached. If this happens and is refilled then placed back in a printer the cartridge will only print until the drop count is reached regardless of the amount of ink that remains in the cartridge. I have heard of some instances where Return Program Cartridges were refilled and the customer brought the cartridge back stating that it only printed for 2 or 3 pages. The cartridge did not reach the drop count before it was refilled.

A printable (PDF) list of Lexmark Cartridges and their “A” counter parts with a column “Refillable: Yes / No” can be down loaded here.
